MEXICAN JUMPING BEANS!

I shrieked when I saw them. “MEXICAN JUMPING BEANS! I CAN’T BELIEVE IT!” The cashier at Five Below replied, “EVERYONE says that!”

The last time I held Mexican Jumping Beans in my hand was in second grade in California. It was like stepping in to the past. I was literally holding something in my hand from a lifetime ago.

What makes a Mexican jumping bean jump? It begins when a Laspeyresia moth lays an egg in a Sebastiana tree in Mexico. The caterpillar hatches and lives inside a seed pod. The pod jumps when the caterpillar eats the inside of the nut and spins a cocoon.

My kids had never heard of them before. Happily, they were sufficiently impressed by the thumping, rolling and bumping of my beans.

I feel like I have three new little pets. Well… two. I think one is a dud. I keep them in a Dunkin Donuts iced coffee cup in my room. Every few hours they jiggle around on their own. When my new pets emerge from their seed pods I’ll set them free, pretending it is not October in the United States. I think I will name them George, Jose and Dud.

They can make it back to Mexico, right?
