Will You Get The Swine Flu Shot? Oink Once For Yes, Two For No

swine flu shotTo vaccinate or not to vaccinate, that is the question.  Let’s see what I can get stirred up in the pot with this one.

I work in a hospital which is requiring everyone to not only get a flu shot, but to get a Swine Flu shot as well.  REQUIRING.  No shot, no job.

When I first read about this policy I was concerned.  Has the H1N1 shot actually been tested?  What will it do to me?  Is it safe?  What about additives?  I was on the fence.  I’ve said on more than one occasion, “I will let everyone else get it first and see what happens to THEM.”

Today they held a “town hall” meeting on the flu, the shots, the intranasals and “swine flu” itself.  What did I learn first?  It is officially the “swine origin influenza virus,” or SOIV.  Clever, no?  I also was surprised to learn that the SOIV intranasal vaccine is more effective than the shot.  Didn’t know that either.  And finally, the only reason the SOIV vaccine is not included in the regular flu vaccine this year is because there wasn’t enough time to add it.

I won’t go into detail on the vaccines, the spread of the virus or the politics in between.  I am not a health care professional and have no business blogging about the medical facts.  But what I do know is I am not afraid of the SOIV vaccination anymore.  As a matter of fact, I believe I want my children to get it as well.  I think there is a lot of “talk” out there that has been started from misinformation.  It’s scary, yes – but from what I’ve learned, it isn’t the monster I had it built up to be.

Another good side?  How many times have you come to work and had your co-worker sneezing and snotting all over the office.  “Why Jim, you appear to be SICK!  GO HOME!”  “Oh no, I will get over this <HACK HACK!> soon <SNEEZE! DRIP! WIPE! TOUCHING DOOR HANDLE>.”  Not any more.  Flu like symptoms and snot-man Jim is OUTTA THERE.  Cha Ching!

Let’s start a swine flu vaccine discussion, shall we?  (Do I see a pot needing to be stirred?)  Are you required to get it?  Will you get it?  Are you afraid of it?  Why?  And even better, will you have your kids get it?

I’ve never had a flu shot and I think I have only had the flu once, at least as an adult. I almost got one last year but since it was my first one I was required to hang around the doctors office for half an hour in case I had a bad reaction. I was in a hurry and told them I’d come back. I never got around to it. I’ll probably take the wait and see approach like you. Let all my friends and family be guinea pigs first. I’m not against it, not really all that concerned about it but there is a part of me that would rather get the SOIV (wouldn’t it be cool if the acronym was SUEY?) virus so that I might me more resistant to the next strain.

I hate shots! But I will get the nose one if they have any left. I heard the government is giving the swine flu vaccine to everyone for free, so don’t let anyone charge you, accept for administering it.

My pediatrician is holding a special flu shot evening where no sick kids will be there. That way everyone who has a well child can get their kids vaccinated away from the sick kids.

  • My brother got infected with H1N1 or Swine Flu in Mexico. He got a mild fever and luckily he did not die.
