Training Monkies

NaBloPoMo’s Day 8.  Eight days of posts and I’m still kicking.  WOOT!

Today’s topic?  “If you could have any job (and instantly have the training and qualifications to do it), which job would you want?”

A stay at home mom.  I didn’t even have to think.

Indeed.  I was born too late.  I would be the happiest woman in the world staying home with my children.  Baking.  Doing pickups.  Being Room Mother.  Volunteering at the school.  It’s what I was born to do.

Sadly, I wasn’t born with a money tree in the back yard.  So every morning, off to work I go.

My children would have benefited greatly if I had been able to stay at home with them.  I am calm.  I am fun.  I am nurturing.  I am strong.  I was built for motherhood.

I am plenty qualified.  No training needed.  Because no mother can be trained through a school.  Mothers can only be trained in the field.  And trust me, we mothers are learning something new every day.  Every hour.  Every second.  No matter who we are or what we do.

Because I had to work a full time job, my children lost out.  On a lot.  It is the biggest regret of my life.

Yes, I’ll say it again.  My children would have had better lives if I had been able to stay home with them.

Funny how a simple blog post topic can cause you to rip open your chest and bare your soul to the world.  Perhaps I should have stuck with my first idea…  monkey trainer?  Oh wait.  That’s motherhood too!

  • This is just a small part of why you and I could be best friends if we lived on the same street. That is what I wanted to be…always. Luckily we worked it out for me to stay home until the kids got into “late” grade school. Then, like you, not having the illusive money tree in my yard, I started and stayed working until after they were out of college. Even then I worked part time until very recently.

I am not sure if my kids would have been better off or not. They both turned out well and because their generation takes it for granted that mom’s work they might not consider there to be advantages of having a stay-at-home mom.

I do think I would have been happier had I not had the pressure of trying to juggle everything for years and years.

    • Wow… your last sentence… happiness. My kids know I’m here for them no matter what. I will leave my job if they need me… “Sorry boss, gotta go”… I spend ALL my time with them when I’m not at work… I am happiest when I am with them. But happy overall in life… if I had been able to stay at home my life WOULD have been happier. Just as you said… such a struggle. Finding safe and good daycare.. all of that… the stress of NOT being home makes you unhappy for sure!

      I WISH we were closer… !!!!

    Wonderful post, Katherine!

“Yes, I’ll say it again. My children would have had better lives if I had been able to stay home with them..”

I’m not a parent/mother, so I really can’t say for sure how I would feel. I think in today’s world (especially with the economy), whether a single parent or couple, most parents have to work. So I think it’s the ‘quality’ time you spend with your children that’s important, not the quantity.

And knowing you through your blog, I get a deep sense that you give quality time to your children and are an excellent mother!

    You ROCK, girl!

    • Thanks Ron. Honestly, some people say, “You are crazy” because when I’m not clocked in at work, I’m with my kids. I NEVER go out. NEVER had a babysitter for them. I spend every second I can with them. Of course they go off with their friends etc as they grow and I encourage that. But when I am home, they know I’m here for them. 🙂

  • You are awesomeness, Katherine.

And, honestly, the ONLY truly GOOD thing about all of my crazy health issues, is that I CAN stay home with my son. And be the mom I want to be.

    • And you are such an amazing person Meleah… your son is going to go FAR, I guarantee you. Family is TIGHT with you…. I can see that… he is going to be something you will be even more proud of, thanks to you!

      • Awww! Thank your for saying that. I hope it’s true!

  • Barb

I was fortunate enough to be able to stay home with my kids for 12 years and I do not regret a minute of it. Was it easy? Hell no… It would’ve been easier in many respects to go back to work. I had to budget, money was really tight… No nice vacations etc…but it was definitely worth it! I am glad I work in the school system b/c I get my summers off…but I would love to stay home even now with them all gone! I could find plenty to keep me occupied!,,, 🙂

    • Barb, that is AMAZING. I guess I’m old fashioned. I truly believe children need their mommies. To pick them up, to hold them when they are tired. To put band-aids on them… it is wonderful you were able to do that!!!

It’s a shame you didn’t get to fulfill your deepest desire, but it’s pretty clear that you’re an amazing mother nonetheless, and one that your children will long love, appreciate and emulate. I’ve nothing but admiration for what you do every day of your life, Katherine.

P.S. — I love mechanical monkeys. I gave one almost exactly like the one in your photo to a dear friend of mine.
      I want it back.
