The Belly Laugh

laughing hysterically

When was the last time you laughed until you couldn’t breathe?  I mean when you really lost it.  Really REALLY lost it.  This weekend was my time.  My time to blow snot harder than I have since high school.

Why Katherine, what was the SOURCE of this episodic blowout?  It must have been something quite humorous, perhaps intellectual with a bit of British humor on top?

UGH.

NAHHHHH.  I’m ashamed to tell you what caused my unexpected meltdown.  I am actually completely and utterly ashamed.

But you know me.  I’m gonna tell you.  It… was……..

THE THREE STOOGES.

SIGH.

Yes.  I’m a girl, last time I checked.  But a scene in the new Three Stooges movie made me laugh so hard I nearly stopped breathing.

If you haven’t seen the movie, I can’t even begin to describe the comedy bit.  But if you’ve seen it you know it well.  The scene with the full cast and turtling.  The TNT.  The cast flying up in the air.  When that cast lifted off the bed with a quiet muffled explosion sound, I lost it.  L-O-S-T –I-T.

Think back to your last satisfying belly laugh.  That was me, times about a billion trillion.  I started to laugh.  And then belly laugh.  And then I looked over and saw my son giving me “the look.”  (You know, the  Mom You Are So Stupid look)  Which made me laugh harder.  And then I couldn’t breathe and I made a seal sound.  And my son imitated me.  Which sent me in to tears.  Wheezing.  Gasping.  Drooling. Praying for air.

And then I fell on the floor.

And I crawled away from the couch and around the corner, wheezing, coughing, crying and laughing hysterically.  I could not breathe.  I COULD NOT BREATHE!

On my hands and knees, I placed my head in the corner and concentrated.  Breathe.  Breathe.  Breathe.  And I began to breathe.  Enough that I was able to crawl back to the couch and pull myself up to my original “Pre-Turtling-Cast-Scene” position.  I turned to my mom and my son and saw them staring at me with wide eyes.  And it started all over again.

The pain of hysterical belly laughing.  And the joy.  And the complete wash of every care and worry that held over you during the day.  It is oh so good.  And far to uncommon in my life.  Here is to more belly laughing.

Think back. When was the last time you completely lost it?  What made you laugh?  I can’t wait to hear!

Well, let me tell ya something, Katherine, after reading this post you had ME laughing a belly laugh!!!!! Your laughter was contagious!

And OMG, I had no idea there was a Three Stooges movie out?!?! Who knew? I LOVED the Three Stooges when I was a kid. Now you have me curious, so after I finish my comment, I’ll have to Google the movie and check it out.

Well, the last time I had a BIG belly laugh was last summer when I was walking down the street with someone from work and going to eat lunch. We were walking along the street, when all of a sudden she SLIPPED in her sandal shoes on the pavement because there was a slant on the concrete. It was so funny because she let out this SCREAM and then suddenly vanished standing next to me, and the next thing I see is that she’s lying on the pavement with her dress up around her waist! OMG…I laughed so hard I almost farted. I know it’s horrible that I laughed, but she didn’t get hurt or anything. It was HILARIOUS! She and I laughed all through lunch!!!

In fact, I’m laughing again right now, thinking about it!

    • AND NOW YOU HAVE ME LAUGHING JUST AS MUCH! OH MY GOSH! From screaming and seeing her just GONE… to laughing until you almost fart. I am DYING over here! Grinning ear to ear, LITERALLY!!!!!! Oh I have a good lunch story Ron. I blogged about it but don’t know if I had met you yet. In a LONG line at Tropical Smoothie with a male co-worker. I reach in my pocket to get money and yes, I had a TAMPON in my pocket… an OB… very compact… I pull it out with the money and somehow FLING IT DOWN THE LINE OF PEOPLE, watching it slowly land on the floor in front of EVERYONE. And my co-worker. BWAH HA HA HAAAA!!!!!!!! Now THAT would have made you fart!

  • Your laughing fit could be a shtick from a Stooges’ episode. I saw the movie and laughed out loud, too. Some scenes were hilarious.

  • I envy you. I’m pretty sure I haven’t laughed that hard since the 60s and there were hallucinogenics involved. Now I’ll have to watch the movie.

    • Jayne, I have to tell you, the movie is AWFUL! One of those movies that is so bad it is good… AT TIMES ha ha! So so cheesy… but that one scene, it was comic genius… no bad words, no dirty humor.. just good clean old fashioned stupid fun.

  • Belly laugh? I know it was recently but I tend to fall apart about the silliest things, then notice I’m getting ‘the look’ from my husband, and it just gets worse, Every time I start to settle down, I look over at him & there it is, ‘the look’ and they hysterics start all over again. He has no idea how ‘the look’ affects me.

    • HA HA! That is like what happened to me! David kept giving me these looks which would send me even further!!!! And then I finally got to HIM and he began to laugh hysterically too. LOVE IT!

  • Anne

I have to admit, I don’t like the Three Stooges. I haven’t seen the new movie but I heard negative things so have avoided it. The last thing that made me really laugh out loud was a Jen Lancaster book.

    • Anne, if you don’t like the three stooges, then yup, it is a pretty bad movie. It was so bad it was good, if that makes sense? I mean, it was AWFUL! 🙂 But it made me laugh…!

  • laughing like that is the best feeling EVER!
