Sometimes You Can Try Too Hard

surfboard repair

Today I discovered that sometimes you can try too hard.  But let me rewind and start from the beginning.  From the moment I was cleaning and accidentally touched the tiniest edge of my son’s surfboard.  The moment when everything turned to slow motion as the surfboard began a downward slide directly towards a wooden table.  I heard myself call out, “Noooooooooo” as the inevitable crunch resounded throughout the room.

And there it was.  My son’s surfboard leaning across a table with a crunch that had my name on it.  We won’t mention he never should have had it in the kitchen standing upright on about six inches of fiberglass, because that would make too much sense.

Saturday after our first beach run I fed everyone lunch and prepared to hit the surf shop for a weekend repair.  I carefully picked up the surfboard and successfully maneuvered it through the house without a hitch.  Slowly down the stairs, under the house and finally into the car.  Phew!

There was a parking spot right in front, and with great luck the shop door was open.  I carefully pulled the board out of the van and walked in.   Two employees chimed in, “May I help you?”

With a huge grin I turn to my right, which causes the back of the board to slam in to a rack of expensive sunglasses.  All at once four people in the shop went, “WhooAAAhhhh!”

I meant to do that.

  • And that would be why I don't travel with a surf board. I am too uncoordinated to have something that large making me square shaped.

    • 'Square shaped' does that mean what I think it means?

    • And this was a SHORT BOARD too! My 16 yo can walk it around like nobody's business. Square shaped made me think of sponge bob square pants for some reason!

  • Im much too clumsy to maneuver a surf board, even in wide open space!

    • But after all the “doing things differently” weeks, maybe you COULD do it now! You might surprise yourself!

  • Oops! Not surprised but still…

    • <popping you on the head>HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYyyyyyyyyyy!</popping you on the head> ha!

  • I do that kind of thing ALL THE TIME! Once, at a place I was working, I dropped a VCR so they had to have it repaired. They did. About 12 seconds after they got it back, I dropped it again. They never let me touch it again. 🙂

    • NO WAY! That is SO FUNNY! That reminded me of when my first child was a little guy. I was holding him, exhausted and sick and walked through a doorway. I bumped his head on the frame and was mortified! So I turned as I was saying I was SO SORRY and I hit his head AGAIN! At least you just hurt a VCR LOL!

  • Kerry

Katherine, thank you for another laugh…”a day in the life of Katherine with the never ending sense of humor” laugh. I can imagine you having your own reality show; no doubt it would be a hit. I love the image I have of you walking into the surf shop with a big smile on your face, filled with hope for a “surfboard fix”, when “oops” there goes the sunglasses. I imagine that your smile turned to surprise and then right back to a smile as you realized the continuing “funny”. So glad for your “oopses” Katherine and the smiles your sharing them send through cyberspace!

    • Kerry, if you meant to make me cry, it worked. Coming from you, with everything you have to deal with, it is more overwhelming than I could ever explain. YOU are the one I need to thank for such beautiful words of kindness. I wish we lived closer. Of course I know you need quiet time – you know me… I would attempt to tip toe in and oops, there goes the stack of antique dishes off the wall! Sending you BIG smiles and a bigger hug… and great thanks!

  • hahaha – I’m starting to understand now. That is clumsy and funny – glad you can laugh at yourself Katherine and thanks for sharing! 🙂
