Beauty and tweens. These two words seem to go together. I’m not sure exactly when it started, but start it did. The moment I noticed my daughter was shaving her legs. Without telling me, that is. “But Mom, there was so much hair on them! I didn’t look pretty!”
Even last week, as we packed for our summer vacation, “Mom, do I look pretty in this?” “Mom, how can I get more tan?” “Mom, does my hair look better this way or that way?”
My first thought was, “Why do young girls feel they always have to be beautiful?” But then I realized I was packing makeup for the one time I knew I would be in the general public during our week away. Perhaps the worry about being beautiful doesn’t stop after your teenage years.
Start taking care of your skin when you are young.
My daughter was tickled to be included in a special interview to be led by HER about staying beautiful during the hot summer months. Imagine her cross-legged in front of me, pushing “Play” on the tape recorder. Not that she knows what a tape recorder is, mind you.
Daughter (Giggling): How do you stay pretty in the summer?
Me: First of all, you don’t have to giggle while imagining me staying pretty. It’s not THAT funny! But in answer to your question, the most important thing to being beautiful is making sure you are always yourself first and foremost.
Daughter: MoooOOOOMMMM! This is serious!
Me: I was serious. But I actually do have a few tips on staying pretty during these 103 degree days. First of all, let’s talk hair. We are in the ocean every day while on vacation. It is very important to wash the salt out each time you’ve been swimming. Rinse your hair and condition it after the first beach trip. Then once you are done for the day, use shampoo and condition again.
Daughter: And never use henna, right?
Me (Rolling my eyes): Thanks for bringing that up. Yes, I bought cheap three-dollar henna and put it in my hair to make it beautiful for the summer. And yes, that was a huge mistake. I looked like a scary clown. Can we move on?
Daughter (Giggling): What else?
Me: I know I’ve told you this before, but the number one thing you can do to stay beautiful is to take care of your skin. I never used moisturizing cream until I was in my 40’s, which was much too late. I also bought cheap razors all my life simply to save a buck. My biggest summer beauty tip – or life tip for that matter – is to use a good razor and a good shaving cream every time you shave. Follow this with a quality moisturizing lotion not only on your legs but on all of your skin. If you keep your skin healthy, you will always look younger.
Daughter: Good to know.
Just before we left for our beach vacation, I purchased Venus Embrace razors for both my daughter and myself. Furthermore, I grabbed the Satin Care Passionista Fruit Shave Gel. It was actually a surprise to find the Venus Embrace isn’t expensive! Why in the world had I been buying those cheap bags of razors?
During this wonderful beach week of sun and fun, she and I have had soft and smooth legs. The Venus Embrace isn’t just a razor. It has five blades and a Ribbon of Moisture. With this and the Satin Care Passionista Fruit Shave Gel, my daughter feels like I’ve spoiled her, and I feel like I’ve spoiled myself.
Salt water does NOT feel good on nicks and cuts!
And the best part? You all know I’m pretty much a klutz. And the apple does not fall far from the tree. With the Venus Embrace? Not one single nick or cut. NOT ONE.
