publishing a book

I’ve gone and done it.  I put pen to paper and wrote myself a book.  For years and years I struggled with the words, the characters, the conflict, the resolution.  And now it’s done.  A complete 800 page novel.

OK.  So I’m lying just a wee bit.  I did write a book.  But it is a children’s book that fits on one single sheet of paper.  It took about an hour to complete.  And by gosh, it’s GOOD.

It all started on one of our drives to the beach house.  “David, I want to write a children’s book.  What do children like the best?”   At eighteen, my son still remembers what was the coolest of the cool from his childhood.  In answer to my question he immediately yelled, “_______ and ______!”

Ahhh but I can’t tell you what he said, because that is the name of the book.  A book that is most unusual, yet if published would become a favorite to many.  It is a page-turner; it makes young children anticipate and allows them to tell part of the story.

Funny thing is….?  You can’t just send your book to a publisher!  What thahhhh!?

Indeed, writers quite similar to both you and I must have a (please do finger quotes) “L-I-T-E-R-A-R-Y A-G-E-N-T.”  Really?!  Apparently, you need some hoightytoighty book nerd to get your foot in a publisher’s door.

literary agents

(Oh wait.  If you are a literary agent, I think you are the GREATEST and I CAN’T RESPECT YOU ENOUGH and … and…. I have this book, see?)

Yea, I blew that one, I’m sure.

But I did it.  I wrote a book.  I am proud of it, and it is GOOD.

Are you writing a book or are you published?  If not and you found you actually had time to write, what would your book be about?

Yahooooooooo! I’m sooooooo happy for you, Katherine!

And I have to tell you, I love children’s books and often read them myself. One of my favorite things to do on my day off is to go to Barnes and Noble, grab a cup of coffee and a few children’s books, and sit there and read for few hours.

I wish I could help you out about publishing, but I know nothing about it personally. However, did you ever think of trying to self-publish through an online company, such as, Lulu.com? I hear they’re great!

Please keep us posted on what transpires with your book.

    The BEST to you!

    • I am SO going to visit lulu… thanks!!!!!

There are some amazing children’s books out there… AMAZING. I think my favorite is “Owl Moon” and “Going on a Bear Hunt”… the kids loved those.

  • Congratulations!! Have you thought about self-publishing? Margaret (NannyGoats) did that (I believe) and she does have a print copy as well as an electronic version. Maybe she could point you in the right direction…?

Good luck, and I’m really REALLY looking forward to reading it!

    • Now I have to google how to self publish. Oh but the problem is, I am NO artist and I need an illustrator… maybe I could get someone and then if the book is published they get the money…. hmmmmm thinking thinking thinking…

  • Way to go. When you get it published let me know.  I’ve got a great grand baby that would like a new book.

    Have a terrific day.   🙂

  • sooo cool that you’ve written a book! amazing. i hope that someone loves it and reads it and publishes it. =) good luck to you in your pursuit of that.

    • I just wish more companies accepted unsolicited manuscripts. I understand why they don’t… but it would help a lot!!!

    Wow.

WOW!! And I mean that seriously!
I’m hopeful for you cuz children’s book are the most funnest things on the market today.  Well, next to sidewalk chalk and bubbles.  We can’t get enough of ’em and use the 2 year old as an excuse.  *laughing* Like I need an excuse?!

Congratulations!  Published or not–that’s a way cool thing!
You will let us know how it all progresses, right?  Agent, schmagent–go GET ’em!!

    • I needed to hear “go GET ’em” more than you know. I just don’t know where to start, and have kind of let it sit for a few days. Tomorrow I am getting on it and mailing the hard copies out!!!!

I loved reading to the kids… especially when they begin to memorize the book and “read” it to you. That is what this book is like. Crossing my fingers and jumping on it tomorrow!!!

  • Congratulations! You can always self publish and cut the biatch out completely.

    • I wish I COULD self publish… I am totally broke though. 🙁 🙁 🙁 Wow it is so great to see you Jen!!!!!!!!

  • OMG!! I am so happy for you, and so proud of you! Congrats on finishing your book. Good luck finding an agent! xoxo

    • Uggghhhh finding a book agent – I am so overwhelmed!!! Wish I could “self publish”… it stinks being poor!!! Thanks for your support and encouragement Meleah – it means a LOT!

Congratulations!  Published or not–that’s a way cool thing!

  • Wow!  See.  There you go.  You do know what you want.  Now children’s book authors, find out what agents represent them and then send your book to every single one.

You can use lulu.com. Its fantastic.

  • As you know, my little ebook just got published and is selling on Amazon and the iBookstore. AND… it didn’t cost me a cent to do! Well, I guess I did pay $45 for Scrivener, which I can recommend as excellent writing software for writers of all sorts. But other than that, ZERO cost. – I made the decision early on to just go electronic. That made things easier, and cheaper. But I guess children’s books do need to be in print.
Have you looked at a full service publisher like Lulu?

    • Ferd, I looked at Lulu but couldn’t figure out what it was. My biggest roadblock now is I need an illustrator…. the book needs a GOOD one to work – it is a huge part of the “plot.” I will have to dig through that site some more…. thanks for the reminder!

  • Congratulations. Finding the time to actually do the work is the hard part. I have been writing a book for about 6 months and I can seem to find the motivation or time to really push it to completion even though the whole story line is done!
