Outside the Box

This month’s photo challenge subject is Outside the Box.  I love that you can interpret this in so many ways.  I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s photos!

  1.  This is basically my third son, Manny.  He and Jessica have been together for as long as I can remember.  Manny is definitely “outside the box” when it comes to humor, interests and personality.  She appreciates him for all his wonderfulness.

2.  This picture means more than you might initially think.  In December, I never thought I would be fishing with my oldest again.  One open heart surgery later I was able to see him take his gear out of the tackle box and fish for the first time in ages with me and my daughter.

3.  I normally don’t buy pricey things for myself, but when I saw this cobalt blue bottle of tequila I decided to go outside the box and buy it.  This is just a cell phone picture I took to show my son I splurged.  Proof of me actually doing something for myself!

4.  My daughter was in the May Court during the beautiful May Procession at school.  This is my favorite picture.  Everyone else is staring ahead while my outside the box daughter turns to me with a smile.

5.  My niece graduated from Brown this month!  We stayed in a beautiful rented apartment filled with quirky, wonderful art.  I found out the owner is a retired professor from the Rhode Island School of Design.  Her taste is definitely outside the box – and I love it!

  • I love your son fishing the best. I know you do too. You’ve much to be thankful for.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

    • We are in the middle of some new heart tests… it just doesn’t seem to end… so we were VERY grateful to have that relaxing time!

  • I love all your photos! The fact your son is fishing with you makes that one purely WONDERFUL….but I love the picture of your daughter turning to you to smile…that one melts my heart.

    • Her last day of school is tomorrow…. I just can’t believe it. Graduation is Sunday… major tears! 😉

      • I know everyone says how fast our children grow up….but they really do don’t they. I will be thinking good thoughts for both you and your daughter on her graduation. Sigh…I know how that feels I have been through graduations with my son and daughter as well. It’s bittersweet isn’t it?

  • Hi Katherine, I love your lost shot and yes you’re right the puppet is very unusual. i really like the shadows and movement you’ve also captured in this photo.

    • She had a doll on a shelf that was made by the same person. I would love to know who that is… it is so unusual!

  • Pamela Wright

Really loved the way you’ve represented the theme with all your pictures but especially the ones of your children – so much love in simple shots.

    • Child pictures and dog pictures… I think my camera is full of them! 🙂

  • Tamara Gerber

Your kids sound great! So glad your son is doing so much better that he’s GONE FISHING 🙂 Very nice beach picture(s)!

  • Danielle Kempe

    Great job as always!

The May court smile is my favorite,

    • I am thinking of framing that picture… it makes me smile every time. 🙂

OUTSTANDING photographs representing “Outside the Box” Katherine!!!!! And what I REALLY love about all of these is your interpretation and (meaning) behind each one. When I initially saw that first shot, before reading, I thought it was a candid shot of a random couple you spotted on the beach that day. GREAT shot!!!!

The second photograph touched me deeply because I know all of what you and your family went through last year and it made my heart swell to know that everything worked out so well and that your son is healthy and strong!

And OMG….40% alcohol in that tequila?!?! I felt drunk just reading the label – HA! And kudos to you for splurging on yourself because you deserve it.

LOVE the naturalness of that May Court shot and your daughter’s smile 🙂

” Her taste is definitely outside the box – and I love it!”

Me too! And I also love the shadow on the wall!

Hope you and your family had a Happy Memorial Day!

    • I had a really hard time with this one…. I am happy I actually got five out of the challenge. June is baseball… I have NO CLUE what to do with that one. I think last year I took a baseball and just put in different places… that will probably be what I do. (I am such a cheater)

The fishing afternoon was VERY moving. My son has gotten some heart palpitations so we are kind of back in the visits and tests and heart monitor. I will never feel safe…. so that day was VERY special.

  • I’m happy to hear everything is working out perfectly and I definetly mean about that bottle of tequilla.

  • Lisa

Gorgeous photo of the couple on the beach! And I love the one of your daughter sneaking a peek at you. Very nice assortment that covers all aspects of the prompt. Happy your son is better and able to enjoy the little joys of life again. xo

  • You definitely went outside the box! But I’m curious what is defined as pricey when it comes to the bottle of tequila.
