Today is the final day of the writing challenge, with the subject “And then there was one.”  I can’t tell you where this little piece came from.  Do I blame it on the 20 subjects I had to write about?  Or do I blame it on the Taco Bell taco I ate after my workout tonight.  Let’s go with the taco.

“Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.”

He tossed a handful of browned petals in to the hole and watched them land in an unimpressive pile around her body. After a moment he got to work pushing the sand in and around the stiff form.

She was the last human he had come in contact with since the epidemic. He assumed she would be the last.

It was for the best. If she had lingered there would have been suffering. Weeping boils, burning skin, blindness…. Yes. This was for the best.

Turning on one foot, he wiped his brow and began to walk. “And then there was one.”

  • Very well done. Scary, but very well done.

For some reason I’m hungry for Taco Bell.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

  • Well, that’s kind of spooky. Will there be more on this tale? Maybe for the next writing challenge? 🙂

  • I agree, it’s kinda creepy, but well done and an interesting take on this final prompt. I assume he felt it was merciful, if she was indeed already sick. If not…

Katherine, AWESOME finish! It gave me the creeps! And it doesn’t matter where this came from because it was stellar! You know me, I love this kind of stuff. Reminds me of a Stephen King novel.

Well done, my friend! And congrats on completing this writing challenge. Brava!

    I thoroughly enjoyed it!

    • Did you know Stephen King wrote a book on how to write a book? I found it by accident this summer and read it and LOVED it. It is an amazing piece of work… very interesting – almost an autobiography. I had no idea how he became who he is… that he was an alcoholic… the accident is in it… So it is REALLY cool you mentioned him!!!!

Love the photo! The story, though very, very nicely done, is a tad depressing for me, today.
