In The Kitchen

Saturday night found us on the Ocean View Pier, loaded up with all the night fishing gear we could carry.  The evening was beautiful, the sunset exquisite and the people around us completely diverse.  Indeed, the stories you can hear on an old, well-worn fishing pier.  Especially when most people fishing are three sheets to the wind.

We made our way home at midnight, our cooler of catch in tow.  Despite how exhausted we were, we had to stay up to clean the fish and cook the crabs.  By 12:30 in the morning, we had our croaker prepared and a pot filled with crabs bubbling on the stove.

But there was one more treat to be prepared.  While crabbing that afternoon, my boys had pulled up two soft shell crabs.  Do you hear the angels singing?

Thank heavens for boys.  My oldest cut the faces off the two crabs, killing them instantly.  I proceeded to clean them, soak them in milk and egg and finally dip them in a mixture of flour and corn meal.  Then off to the frying pan they went.

(DON’T I SOUND OH SO COOL?  TIME TO TELL THE TRUTH.  WHEN MY SON WAS ABOUT TO “PUT DOWN” THE CRABS, I RAN OUT ON TO THE DECK, COVERED MY EARS AND WENT LA LA LA LA!)

At one in the morning, my boys and I sat at the kitchen table with weary and tired eyes, eating our fill of both hard and soft-shell crabs.  We talked about our evening’s adventures, laughed and simply enjoyed being together.

This weekend in the kitchen, we had more than good food.  Because this weekend, we simply had each other.
