My Favorite Food
Published on Monday, October 15, 2012 by

How do you pick?  Sushi.  Angel Food cake with seven minute icing.  Dolmades.  There are so many!

Favorite foods often boil down to where you eat the food and with whom, don’t you think?  When I think of these foods, I think of moments in time when I ate them with people I love.

One of my favorite food memories involves sitting at the picnic table on the beach house deck.  The table is covered by newspaper.

On the newspaper you will find nutcrackers, ice-cold beer and a big bowl of potato chips.  At the center of the table is a huge pan of steamed blue crabs.  There are bowls of melted butter, of vinegar and of Old Bay Seasoning.

Family members are elbow to elbow, laughing, talking, watching for wildlife and patiently cracking crab after crab.

As of this afternoon, I had yet to find a picture representing my favorite food.  Or at least one of them.  Until the moment my son looked in the belly of the fish he was cleaning and voila, I had my picture.   How could I not laugh aloud?

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you one of my favorite foods… although not quite in the form I prefer it!

  • I like crab cakes made with blue crabs.

  • Either that crab is very small or your son’s fish was huge! Love crab.

I’ll be in D.C. In a few weeks, and I intend to visit the Capitol Grill, home to the very best crab cakes I’ve ever eaten. I don’t think they’re made with blue crab, but I’ll ask. And if they are, I’ll hoist a beer in your honor.

Also, that’s a disgusting photo. Seriously. Please stop.

    Awesome photo, Katherine!

And also an awesome food memory. It brought back my own memories of the same thing in my family.

  • BWAHAHAHA! Oh my, we do share good taste!!

  • I love crab! But man! They are a messy meal, aren’t they?

  • Coco

I love crab cakes! When I eat crab itself, I prefer a big one as it’s easy to eat. Haha. Cute photo!

  • Okay, I can’t quite decide if I absolutely love your take on the theme, or if it’s just incredibly gross. Either way, it sounds delicious!

  • Jamie Baker

Blue crab. Snow Crab. King Crab. Dungeness Crab. I love them all.

  • Wait… the crab was IN the fish? I love crab… especially drenched in butter!

  • OMG! Yummmerz!

  • ladyV

i might be the only one who doesn’t love seafood. 🙁

  • I’m sorry, Katherine! I’m really trying to find something other than “ewwwww” to say. Um, nope. Can’t think of anything. Sorry. Ewwwwwwwwwww! 🙂

  • Mel

I adore the description of the tradition with the elbow to elbow family.

    It ends there……..

LOLOLOL But bless the kiddos heart for giving you photo material?

Oh yum!!! I totally agree….one of my favorite restaurants in Georgia used to have their tables covered in newspapers with a hole in the center of the table where you would throw the shell (a garbage pail was underneath)…oh and the melted butter and the beer…I am drooling….blue crabs were a hit today on this challenge 😉

  • Ah hahahahahahahaha! The Universe provides.

  • The best places to eat are where your elbows slide off the table.

  • Interesting…so the crab is also the favorite food of that (now gutted) fish.

  • Barb Paige

crabs…. *head nodding* with beer of course….lips smacking!!!!

  • Hmm, can’t say that I want it in that form either. However prepared as described above that, I would happily dig in!
