Homemade Peanut Butter Is Not Worth It

Or is it?

My boss brought a trash bag full of raw, dried peanuts to work.  “I know!  I’ll make homemade peanut butter!”  One googled recipe and 30 minutes later, I soon found myself with a baking pan full of homemade roasted peanuts.

how to roast peanuts

Alton Brown’s homemade peanut butter recipe says preparation time is only five minutes.  Oh really?!

Once the peanuts were cooled, my son and I began to shell.  And shell.  And shell.  This is what the peanuts looked like after thirty minutes of shelling:

At this point, my son noted, “I feel like one of those ladies in the shelling factory on Willy Wonka!”  Indeed.  Shelling peanuts takes a lot of time and rips your skin apart.  And not ONE PEANUT SHELL contained a golden freaking ticket.

Forty five minutes later, we were done.  If I never see another peanut again I will be happy.

Would you believe all that work only produced this?!

When one begins a recipe, one should be sure one has all the ingredients on hand.  THIS one didn’t have peanut oil.  OR vegetable oil.  Frantically looking around the kitchen, I found a jar of hot pepper oil I made a month ago.  It could work, right?

Into the Ninja Master Prep went peanuts, honey and hot pepper oil.  Getting it all to blend took more than five minutes alone.  Once the peanut butter was done, I determined it needed more oil.  The texture was far more dry than creamy.  But did I want those extra calories?  Nahhh.  I chose to go dryer with less fat.

The taste test?  Freshly roasted peanuts.  Honey.  A touch of hot pepper oil.  It took FAR too much time.  It’s dry and I don’t want to fix it by adding more oil.  It only made a sandwich sized container of homemade peanut butter.  But…

Now.  About those boiling peanuts in the kitchen that I’m attempting to ignore.

  • You go to the grocery store and pick your favorite peanut butter and then go home and eat it.  That’s way easier.  I get you tons of credit for taking this on though.

    Have a terrific day.   🙂

Oh my God….after so much work!!!!!! es.smeet.com/chat

  • I gotta give you a lot of credit. I wouldn’t have the patience to shell those peanuts!

Oh, come come–boiled peanuts are AWESOME.

Now, peanutbutter with hot pepper oil?
    Ummm…….LOL……I’m glad you enjoyed it.

  • The hot pepper sounds really good. I made peanut butter once when I was about 5. My neighbor and I used hammers to smash peanuts on his mom’s kitchen table. She wasn’t too happy about the whole thing. I remember thinking then that it wasn’t worth the work.

Hahahaha! Now there’s something I would NOT be attempting!  LOL!  Love the photo story though.

I’m curious as to why you need to add oil to a ‘nut’ which already contains enough oil to make it worth processing for that alone, but I can see where hot oil might work – if you like it hot!

  • Through experimentation comes experience.  I’m sure you will treasure the experience, but probably not repeat it.  After all that work, I’m glad the final product was tasty.

  • Very similar to our family’s hey-let’s-make-our-own-maple-syrup adventure. It tasted so good on those thimble-sized pancakes.

Katherine, the ending of this post….CRACKED. ME. UP.

    Flawless finish!

But I must say, BRAVA to you because the peanut butter you made, looks so YUMMMY!

And this is coming from a peanut butter freak. I LOVE peanut butter!

Have a wonderful weekend, my friend!

    • I’m going to have to make more (I just roasted more peanuts) and send you some!!!! But I have to figure out the “dry” issue… they were so good – but needed to be more spreadable.

  • According to my youngest, peanuts that don’t have a shell don’t taste as good as peanuts that do. So he makes us buy them in the shells. Then Jepeto and I argue over whose turn it is to shell them. Next time, I’ll just send them to you! 🙂

    • Nicky, honestly…? The peanuts with shells freshly roasted? SO MUCH BETTER. Your youngest is RIGHT! Sooo since you guys are so experienced in shelling peanuts, I’m thinking I can send MINE to YOU?! 😉

  • That is really awesome.  I love peanut butter but I wouldn’t make it since I am the only one in the family who eats it.  You did an amazing job.

    • Believe it or not, after this I roasted two other trays! It tasted THAT GOOD. But have I shelled them yet? Noooooo!

I only have one other person that eats peanut butter – but not because of allergies. I consider myself lucky. 🙂

      Good to “see” you!

  • oh man sb must have been really bored 🙂 i hope that you enjoyed that at least 🙂

  • Wow. I don’t think I would have gotten past shelling the peanuts before sending a nasty message to Mr. Alton Brown. Good for you for sticking it out!
