Happy Birthday To My First Born

Sixteen years ago to the day it was Friday the 13^th. To add to the excitement, there was a meteor shower and a full moon.  How do I remember this?  It was the day my first child was born.

Today this son is sixteen years old.  SIXTEEN YEARS OLD.  And what a ride it has been.  From 8 months of screaming and multiple doctor’s visits to food allergy and digestive specialists to now – surf shops, lacrosse games and wrestling matches.

They tell you it goes by quickly.  Believe them.  After all, it was only yesterday that I sat in front of his little bouncy seat simply staring at him in absolute amazement.  And you know what?  Sometimes I still look at him while he is sleeping, still in utter amazement.  This is my son.  My first child.  And now he is almost a man.

David is a kind and generous young man.  He stays to himself in school, going about his business while avoiding the business of others.  He is never afraid to try a new sport, and will jump into uncertain situations while looking back at me saying, “It’s OK Mom, I’m FINE.”

He is the first to come to me when I am crying or sick and has talked me through many hard times. He can act silly and childish when the time calls for it, which makes me know that he will be a wonderful father to some very lucky children.

Happy Birthday David.  I count on you more than you know.  Or maybe you DO know.  I love you!
