Black and White
Published on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 by

This month’s photo challenge is black and white.  I loved being forced to think about what might be interesting in black and white vs color.  It was a fun month of picture taking!

  1.  This little guy ran and ran and RAN on the beach.  He was so happy!

2.  This man was fishing two days before the tropical storm was due to hit.  I loved how he was standing while reading the waves.

3.  You know me.  I love my osprey and fish!

4.  I enjoyed watching this swan being taken all over the beach.  It was sporting a blow up pineapple during this wipeout.

5.  This is one of our local friends from the surf shop.  You couldn’t meet a nicer person!

  • oh wow, wow, wow . . .these are incredible shots. My favourite has to be the Osprey though.

  • Wow, these are some awesome black and white shots.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

  • Tamara Gerber

Hey, I think I met an old acquaintance, your osprey! 😉
Great beach shots, the surfer dude is my favorite!

  • Lisa

Awesome beach shots! I would have loved to have seen a shot of you sporting an inflatable pineapple. 🙂 The osprey capture is fantastic.

  • Mike Davis

That osprey is amazing, The surfer really catches my eye as well. Great stuff!

  • Ron

    *thunderous applause*

Katherine, each and everyone of these shots are freaking FANTASTIC!!!!! Truly my friend, they ROCK! Your talent with the camera is so inspiring.

As you know, I am partial to black and white photographs because in their lack of color, I think they convey such feeling and emotion. I also know that black and white is more challenging to shoot, so I am even more impressed with your work.

The osprey is just incredible! Looks like something out of National Geographic. And I absolutely love the last shot because it’s candid, natural and has action within it.

    BRAVA to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have a great rest of your week!

    • I LOVE your black and white photos. I never think to shoot black and white… I forget about it. But then I see your pictures and I am like “Oh YEAAAAA!” I never thought about how you see the emotion and feeling of a picture when the color is stripped. You are absolutely right. You really have to LOOK at the photo… it makes sense!
      Have a FANTASTIC night!

Fabulous shots! You have a great eye for line and composition.

The surfer photo is amazing! I love everything about it – his position, the board’s angle, and all the water droplets caught midair.

  • Kathy M.

Wow, your ability to capture action in the moment is amazing!

  • Super jealous of your pictures especially number 3. I haven’t yet been able to catch some great nature shots like that. And not to take away from the others because they’re all great!

  • LOVE your photos. I have never been able to capture motion shots and yours are spectacular.

  • Danielle Kempe

I love your photos! You have a great eye for photography.

Seems like it was a fun day on the beach too!

  • I love your photos. Black and white adds drama to a photograph. Great shot of the surfer. That wasn’t easy to capture. Loved them all. The swan w/fish–wow!

Great B&W action shots! I love the doggie photo too. The water action photos are so well captured.

  • Pamela Wright

Such great shots and they were all perfect for black and white. Up until the last shot the puppy dog was my favourite, but that picture of the surfer is brilliant – really well captured.

  • You know what I love here — you took a spot (beach/ocean) that is rarely ever in black and white and made it interesting. The beach has so much color and life and you still made it excellent without the color. Love the surfer. The bird with fish in claws is amazing. Great work!

My favourite aspect of the photo blogging challenge is the chance for armchair travel to everyone’s favourite places – this beach is obviously one of your favourite places in the world! You’ve got a great mixture of nature and people shots this month. I also like how most of your shots either don’t include the sky or include only a very small section of sky, to further emphasize that the ocean is the main feature here.
